Product Model
– a description of services and products

What is a Product Model?

A Product Model is used to describe how our products and services are structured. The product model helps us gain a common understanding of our offerings and the concepts we use within the organization.

Why should you use a Product Model?

Visually describing our products and services in models using different object types brings with it a number of advantages:

  1. Consensus and Improved Understanding
Products and services can sometimes be complex to describe in words or text. Visualizing them using graphical models can help you and your colleagues quickly understand what you offer. The Product Model becomes an easy-to-understand method for teaching new employees, stakeholders, and customers about your offering.
  2. Support for the Sales-team
Keeping track of a wide range of products and services can be challenging. The Product Model is a perfect basis for your sales staff to understand and present your products and services to potential customers.
  3. Visualize to Improve
When we make something visible and concrete, it is easier to identify areas for improvement. By visually describing how our products and services are structured, we also make the gaps in our offer visible. In this way, we can improve our offer.
  4. A Base for Development
The Product Model also helps us justify changes and developments in our offering. When we make ideas and improvements visible in the product model, it is easier for investors and other stakeholders to understand the value.

How do you create a Product Model?

2c8 Apps is a visualization tool that allows you to create interactive Product Models. In this fictional example, we will visualize our existing product and service offering as a shoe store. We start by placing business objects that represent our products and services.

After positioning our products and services, it is time to break them down into their “components” and draw relations to them. In this case, we choose the relation “Consists of”.

Now we have a clear picture of what products and services we offer our customers. As we have drawn relationships between the objects, we can get the information from 2c8 Apps in another form, for example, as a matrix or report.
